The Defense Ministry of the self-proclaimed republic of
Nagorno-Karabakh has claimed that its armed forces managed to stop
an Azeri military unit from entering Karabakh territory.
The Defense Ministry told Interfax that an Azeri commando unit crossed
the contact line between the Azeri and Nagorno-Karabakh armed forces in
its northeastern region and seized a Nagorno-Karabakh stronghold near
the village of Levonarkh in the Mardakert district early on March 4.
"Following several hours of an intense fighting, the enemy had to flee
leaving eight dead servicemen and weapons at the battleground," the
Defense Ministry said. Two Nagorno-Karabakh servicemen were wounded,
it said.
By acting this way, Azerbaijan is trying to destabilize the situation
not only in the border area but also in the entire region, it said.
"The Nagorno-Karabakh Defense Ministry once again warns Azerbaijan
that any action threatening Nagorno-Karabakh's security will be curbed
just as resolutely," it said.
The Nagorno-Karabakh Defense Ministry called on Azerbaijan to strictly
comply with truce conditions and not to threaten the region's peace
and security.
