    SWISS PRESIDENT VISITS AZERBAIJAN PARLIAMENT

    Baku, May 12, 2008 (Asia Pulse Data Source via COMTEX) -- -- As part
    of his visit to Azerbaijan, President of the Swiss Confederation
    Pascal Couchepin has today visited the Milli Majlis of Azerbaijan
    (Parliament).

    After having familiarized himself with Heydar Aliyev Memorial Hall and
    signed the Guest Book at Milli Majlis, the Swiss president met with
    Ogtay Asadov, Speaker of the Azerbaijan Parliament.

    Mr. Asadov said relations between Azerbaijan and Switzerland are on a
    high level, adding that President Ilham Aliyev attaches great
    importance to expansion of these relations.

    The Milli Majlis Chairman informed the Swiss president of Azerbaijans
    recent achievements, as well as its significant role in ensuring
    European energy security.

    He said more than 10 companies of Switzerland have invested in various
    spheres of economy in Azerbaijan.

    Speaking about the role of legislative bodies in strengthening of
    relations between the two countries, Mr. Asadov stressed
    Azerbaijan-Switzerland inter-parliamentary friendship group has great
    role in this issue.

    Speaker of the Milli Majlis also briefed the president on the
    Armenia-Azerbaijan, Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

    Expressing his satisfaction with the visit to Azerbaijan, the Swiss
    President said Azerbaijan with speedy development has occupied a
    worthy place in the world.

    The visits of heads of states to Azerbaijan proves that the country
    has achieved significant progress in human rights, economy and other
    spheres, underlined the Swiss president.

    He also noted Switzerland-Azerbaijan friendship group would be
    established in the Swiss parliament soon.

    The meeting also focused on other issues of mutual interest.
