Azerbaijan
The US Azerias Network (USAN), as well as American Azerbaijanis,
were on the whole satisfied with results of elections in the United
States, said Adil Baghirov, USAN co-founder and general director.
He explained this by the fact that almost all friends of
Azerbaijanis in the Congress (both in the Senate and in the House of
Representatives), such as co-chairs of Azerbaijani Cocus Congressmen
Solomon Ortiz and Bill Schuster, as well as governors and local
delegates were re-elected.
"We also found new friends in the US senate, such as senator Warner. We
are glad to the victory of our friends. At the same time, several
pro-Armenian and anti-Azerbaijani and anti-Turkish congressmen and
senators lost their seats," said Baghirov.
He especially stressed that for the first time in the US history,
Azerbaijani American and USAN member G.Vafai became an official
delegate from New York in one of two biggest parties of the country
(Republican), which is a great achievement for our network.
As for the influence of the results of US elections on the
US-Azerbaijani relations, he said most depends on the administration
of the new president and the vise president.
"Certainly, the new president, the vise president and their associates
realize the importance and strategic nature of relations with
Azerbaijan, Turkey and other Caucasus and Caspian states. President
Obama, to our great pleasure, visited Azerbaijan, which will add to
his deeper understanding of our county's geopolitical and geostrategic
importance", said the USAN co-founder, adding that, therefore, such
priorities as energy, security and human rights will remain important
but the domination of any of them will depend on the situation,
work and activeness of American Azerbaijanis and other factors.
According to Baghirov, commenting on the attitude of the new White
House administration to discriminative amendments on Azerbaijan he
said he does not think that amendment 907 will be fully annulled,
but there can be altering of the Jackson-Venick amendment, to which
American Azerbaijanis have been attracting attention of the congress
for many years.
"Here most depends both on the international situation and Azerbaijani
diaspora, and certainly Azerbaijan, Turkey and other countries. It
is clear that it is impossible to eliminate miscalculations in the
political architecture of the United States if there is no strong
diaspora.
As for the resolution of the Karabakh conflict, the efforts are
intensifying as there is an understanding that conflict should be
settled, otherwise they explode like old volcanoes.
"But I would like to note that only Azerbaijan and its people are able
to liberate the lands and return the sovereign control over Karabakh
to Baku. Azerbaijanis need this land more than ever, therefore,
only strong Azerbaijan with a powerful and modern economy, fair laws,
free society, professional (hired) army, high level of patriotism and
education, effective reforms in the sphere of health, education and
justice, care of both young and older generation and love for its land
and its history may settle all principle issues. No one can settle
Azerbaijani problems for Azerbaijan, they can only help by 20-30%",
said Baghirov.
