ILSA Sharp's latest book 'E&O: Pearl of Penang' is a labour of
love. She worked on it for twenty years.
Sharp is the author of over 20 books but is most well-known in these
parts for her books on Southeast Asia's great hotels, particularly
those built and started by the Armenian Sarkies brothers. Her book
on Singa-pore's Raffles Hotel is now a classic.
But her latest book took a long time to complete.
Although it seemed a natural progression from the Raffles book, it had
had more false starts and hiccups than any other book project. Its
journey mirrors this Penang heritage landmark's development from
darkness into light, from decline to restoration.
Established in 1885, the E&O Hotel is associated with elegance and
sophistication.
It used to be the special enclave of Britishness, attracting the likes
of Rudyard Kipling, Charlie Chaplin, Noel Coward and, in more modern
times, Burt Lancaster.
Ilsa Sharp will be at the launch of 'E&O: Pearl of Penang' on Dec 4,
where copies of the book will be on sale at a special discount with
Sharp ready to sign autographs.
