RUSSIAN AND ARMENIAN PRESIDENTS WITNESS LAUNCH OF MOBILE WIMAX SERVICE IN ARMENIA

Comstar UTS presents MiMAX USB devices to government leaders at
unveiling of nationwide network powered by Airspan radios.
Airspan Networks announced that an official ceremony was held in
Yerevan, Armenia last week to launch Comstar's nationwide WiMAX
network. At the ceremony, Comstar's CEO presented Airspan's MiMAX
Q-Series USB devices to Russia's President Dmitry Medvedev and
President Serge Sarkisyan of Armenia.
Comstar has deployed Airspan's WiMAX equipment to create a hybrid
network capable of fixed and mobile services. The network uses 24 base
stations to cover Yerevan and 18 additional Armenian cities. WiMAX
services are offered to commercial and consumer customers featuring
high-speed Internet, voice over IP (VoIP), video conferencing and
mobile services.
A highlight of the ceremony was a two-way video conference between
the presidents and a medical diagnostics center in the city of
Armavir. The heads of state received a briefing from the center on a
pilot deployment for mobile WiMAX. "This national WiMAX network is a
unique project for Armenia and one of the first projects of its kind
worldwide," said Sergey Pridantsev, president and chief executive
officer of Comstar UTS.
Comstar is using Airspan's EasyST indoor subscriber stations based
on the IEEE 802.16e-2005 standard for the deployment. "We are very
proud to partner with Comstar in such a revolutionary project,"
stated Anders Rendahl, Airspan's Senior Vice President & General
Manager EMEA. "The attendance of the Presidents of Russia and Armenia
to this ceremony only highlights the importance of the life-changing
effects a network such as this can have on a country like Armenia."
Armenia has a population approaching 3 million with just over one-third
living in the capital city of Yerevan. A September 2007 study found
only 173,000 Internet users in the country with a mere 2,000 having
broadband access. The availability of a nationwide broadband network
is certain to impact those statistics in the coming years.
