Baku, 15 September: At the centre of the visit to Baku on Saturday
[13 September] of Iranian Foreign Minister Manuchehr Mottaki were the
latest developments in the Caucasus and Azerbaijan-Iran relations,
Novruz Mammadov, head of the foreign relations department of the
presidential administration, told Turan news agency. He said that
the visit only lasted four hours.
Mottaki visited Baku on his way back from Moscow. According to the
Russian media, he discussed with [Russian Foreign Minister Sergey]
Lavrov the same issues, as well as the price of gas for foreign
consumers.
In the opinion of observers in Azerbaijan, Iran's close attention
to the region is caused by the recent visits to Baku and Tbilisi by
US Vice-President Dick Cheney and Turkey's initiative of "Caucasus
platform". Tehran fears losing the levers of influence and pressure
with regard to both Baku and Yerevan in the event of an improvement
in Armenia-Turkey relations.
