51 LETTERS IN ONE YEAR

It has been exactly one year since the wives of political prisoners
started to gather in front of the Prosecutor General's office building,
submit letters to the Prosecutor General and demand the release of
the political prisoners and punishment of the real culprits of March 1.
"April 7 and the other holidays mean nothing to us while our husbands
are in jail. They were arrested for their political views. They are
all innocent and the culprits will be brought to justice sooner or
later," say the women.
They submitted their 51st letter to the Prosecutor General today
knowing very well that this one was going to remain unanswered just
like the previous fifty.
Melissa Brown, wife of former Minister of Foreign Affairs charged
with the "Case of Seven", says that the Armenian authorities are
trying to play games with Europe by making reforms in the Criminal
Code and the revised charge is as strict as before because it foresees
a sentencing of 4-10 years in jail.
The women held pictures of the political prisoners screaming "Freedom
for political prisoners", "Free, Independent Armenia", "You will
be brought to justice". They stayed near the building for nearly 40
minutes, after which they moved towards the Kentron and Nork Marash
district first instance court where there was going to be a discussion
of the appeal for Armenian National Congress representative Vladimir
Karapetyan.
Karapetyan demanded prosecutors to start a criminal persecution of
the contraband police officers who cursed the people gathered in
the court yard during the trial of the "Case of Seven" on January
16. The Special Investigative Service refused to do so and today,
through the means of the court, Vladimir Karapetyan is trying to make
the service start a persecution against those police officers, better
yet high ranking police officers Robert Melkonyan and Valeri Osipyan.
