Political prisoner Shant Harutyunyan, who was arrested during the
post-election unrest based on his public announcement on March 1, has
been undergoing physical and psychological pressures at the "Vardashen"
penitentiary since the end of February," stated in the statement by
the RA Committee on Defense of Political Prisoners and the Persecuted.
According to the committee, Shant Harutyunyan was already isolated
from the outside world in his cell.
"He was prohibited from seeing or talking with his relatives on the
phone for no reason at all. His relatives and the public following-up
on the trial were caught by surprise when the Kentron and Nork-Marash
districts first instance court ruled that Shant Harutyunyan must
undergo a forensic examination."
Shant Harutyunyan has been kept isolated at the Nubarashen psychiatric
hospital since March 17. Even his family can't visit him and have no
information about his health and conditions.
"The RA Committee on Defense of Political Prisoners and the Persecuted
expresses concerns regarding the fate of Shant Harutyunyan and declares
that the current Armenian authorities are the ones responsible for
his health and security."
