President Obama deftly managed to avoid a campaign promise Friday.
Presidential candidate Obama said he would officially recognize as
genocide the deaths of 1.5 million Armenians in Turkey between April
1915 and 1923. Turkey denies the accusation.
However, on the 94th anniversary of the killings, President Obama
chose the path of his two predecessors and avoided the term.
Putting geopolitics ahead of campaign rhetoric, President Obama called
the deaths "a great calamity" and "one of the great atrocities of
the 20th century."
