VASILY IVANCHUK, WINNER OF 5TH STAGE FIDE GRAND PRIX TOURNAMENT IN JERMUK

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ 5th stage of the FIDE Grand Prix completed on August
23, the 80th birth anniversary of 9-th World Champion Tigran Petrosian
in the Armenian resort town of Jermuk. After 13 rounds Ukrainian
grandmaster Vasily Ivanchuk became the winner of the tournament,
collecting 8.5 points. 2nd and 3rd places with 8 points were shared
by Armenian grandmaster Levon Aronian and the Israeli Boris Gelfand.
Before the final 13th round Peter Leko and Vassily Ivanchuk were
leading with 7,5 points. Aronian with Kasimjanov, Alekseev and Gelfand
lagged behind the leaders by the half point. But Leko in the final
round was defeated, yielding to Gelfand, and sharing the 4-6 places
of the tournament table with Kasimjanov and Alekseev.
In contrast to the Hungarian chess player, Vasily Ivanchuk did not
miss his chance, and with Black had a triumph over Vladimir Akopyan,
securing the first place in 5th stage.
Aronian, in turn, defeated the Russians Ernesto Inarkiev, breaking
the resistance of an opponent at 57the move.
