ARMENIA TO FIGHT AGAINST USAGE OF PLASTIC BAGS

"Children of Armenia Fund" NGO jointly with HSBC Bank Armenia are
initiating a new program "Environmental protection and development
of female entrepreneurship in rural areas". This program is aimed
to protect environment, as well as provide employment for women ,
living in rural communities. The program is supported by the STAR
supermarkets' network. The latter is pledged to disseminate reusable
packages, instead of plastic bags.
According to Chief Executive Officer of HSBC Bank Armenia Tim Slater,
HSBC Bank Armenia invests USD 25 000 in this project.
The total cost of the program is USD 36 000. The program starts
in the Armavir region. A small enterprise will be established,
where rural women will sew cloth bags. In addition, for organizing a
small business, rural women will participate in seminars on business
management.
"Each of us must join this program, and take a social responsibility in
regard to environment", Vahan Kerobyan, STAR executive director
told a PanARMENIAN.Net reporter. In the near future STAR plans
to buy about 1000 of these packages and distribute them in
their supermarkets. Vahan Kerobyan informed that STAR has already
participated in an environmental program, such as Arevordi festival,
during which it distributed paper bags.
