    21 YEARS HAVE PASSED SINCE SPITAK TRAGEDY

    ArmInfo. Today, Armenia commemorates the victims of the destructive
    Spitak earthquake on December 7,1988, which killed over 25,000 people.

    Spitak earthquake has become one of the tragic pages in the history
    of the Armenian people.

    The earthquake, which happened at 11: 41 AM, destructed the towns of
    Spitak and Leninakan down to rock bottom, over hundred of villages
    and several towns were destructed partially, earthquake shocks were
    felt also in Yerevan and Tbilisi. President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan
    and Prime Minister Tigran Sarkisyan will visit Gyumri and Spitak on
    December 7 morning to pay tribute to the memory of the earthquake
    victims, as well as get acquainted with the course of restoration
    works in the earthquake zone. According to S. Sargsyan's statement,
    there will be no changes in the programmes, being implemented in
    the earthquake zone, in view of the global crisis. In particular,
    according to the draft state budget for 2010, it is scheduled to
    direct about $57 mln to construction of housing for the people left
    without shelter as a result of Spitak earthquake. It is scheduled to
    build 2.3 thsd flats in Gyumri, 182 flats in Akhuryan, 226 houses in
    a number of other villages of Shirak region. 354 flats will be built
    in Spitak and 1821 houses - in the villages of Lori region.
