Former members of the Democratic Society Party, a Kurdish political
party in Turkey, which was shut down by Turkey's Top Court Friday
over ties with the terrorist organization Kurdistan Workers' Party
(PKK), said they officially resigned from parliament, and would
literally appeal to the country with a symbolic trip to Diyarbakir,
reports Turkish news agency Anadolu Ajansi.
An official statement issued by DTP Sunday, said the party group had
gathered before the announcement of the court's decision and decided
to appeal to the country.
The statement said when the court started deliberations for a decision,
DTP leader Ahmet Turk had announced that should DTP be shut down
and a single one of their members be expelled from the parliament,
they would all resign and appeal to the country.
The statement said, during that meeting, all DTP members have
submitted their letters of resignation to the group chair, as a sign
of determination for appealing to the country, noting that their
decision still stood.
It said rumors that the remaining party members who were not expelled
would form a new group in the parliament were false, and all former
DTP members would literally appeal to the country with a symbolic
trip to Diyarbakir on Monday.
All party organs and executives will gather the same day at a meeting
to decide how and when the decision to appeal to the country would
be executed.
The Constitutional Court, Turkey's top legal authority, has decided
to shut down DTP on charges that it has ties with the terrorist
organization PKK. 37 DTP executives, including Turk and MP Aysel
Tugluk, were banned from politics for five years.
Dissolved DTP announced Saturday its party members have withdrawn
from the Turkish parliament.
Ahmet Turk, addressing the press as DTP Chair for the last time, argued
that the decision of the Constitutional Court was political announcing
that remaining DTP deputies would not attend parliamentary sessions.
