Gultekin Hajibeyli "Karabakh Armenians insist on the deployment
of peacekeeping forces in the region under the pretext of ensuring
its security.
Some 40,000-50,000 Armenians live in Nagorno Karabakh today, while 400
thousand Azerbaijanis live in blockade in another region of Azerbaijan
- Nakhchivan. Why not guarantee their safety? Indeed, Nakhchivan
is in a greater need for such guarantees, said Gultekin Hajibeyli,
deputy chairman of the MM committee on international relations and
interparliamentary ties.
According to her, Armenians and Azerbaijanis will have to coexist in
Karabakh and this is the greatest guarantee of security.
"Establishment of a sort of a buffer zone around Nagorno Karabakh
and deployment of peacekeeping forces there would be a step contrary
to the interests of Azerbaijan. Besides, this is undesirable for the
image of the Azerbaijani people - it turns out that Azerbaijanis pose
a threat to Armenians and that Azerbaijanis are aggressive while
numerous population of Nakhchivan does not need security because
Armenians are the people of culture and will not attack. But such
speculations are unfounded.
Referring to the fact that Armenia and its supporters have long been
claiming for the Azerbaijani territory, the deputy said:
"They are busy primarily with the occupation of Karabakh so far, but
I have no doubt that the next target of Armenian chauvinists will be
Nakhchivan. Therefore, I would like to recall the glaringly unjust
and sharp EU resolution on the destruction of Armenian cross stones in
Nakhchivan. The resolution condemned this as an act of vandalism. I do
not think that the European Union was unaware of the Albanian Christian
culture and its fundamental role in forming the modern culture of the
Azerbaijani people. They could not know that the cross-stones are not
Armenian monument and they belong to the Albanian culture and their
destruction would affect the Azerbaijani culture.
I think that the matter is the policies of certain circles, aimed at
laying the foundation for the Armenian claims on Nakhchivan. These
circles are building their policies largely with respect to the actions
of Azerbaijan in the Karabakh issue. In other words, any concession
on our part would be perceived by them as an incentive and lead to
the revitalization of the Armenian side in the Nakhchivan direction,
while at the same time it may cause further provocations on the basis
of ethnic separatism in the country".
