Armenian turcologist: Positions of Moscow and Ankara on Karabakh peace
    process do not coincide

    2009-02-21 19:16:00

ArmInfo. The positions of Moscow and Ankara in the Karabakh peace
process do not coincide, Director of the Institute of Oriental Studies
of the Armenian National Academy of Sciences, turcologist Rouben
Safrastyan said at today's press-conference. According to him, Turkey
is trying to involve Russia in the project on construction of the first
nuclear power plant in Turkey. In addition, Russia and Turkey are
actively cooperating in the sphere of economy, and the commodity
turnover between the two countries fixed in 2008 amounted to 32 mln
USD, this index being unprecedented. However, Safrastyan thinks this
doesn't mean that the positions of Russia and Turkey coincide in all
issues. "Moscow and Ankara will never reach a complete consensus on the
South Caucasus. It will become for Russia and Turkey the region in
which both countries will try to strengthen their influence. In its
turn, this will give a chance to Armenia to more soberly assess the
processes between these two countries",- Safrastyan concluded.
