YEREVAN, JANUARY 28, NOYAN TAPAN. The Chairman of the Forum of
the Union of European Armenians Ashot Grigorian met with the EU
Special Representative for the South Caucasus Peter Semneby. The
idea of creating a new unit - confederation in the South Caucasus was
discussed at the meeting. A. Grigorian proposed that the European Union
develop an investment program for bringing the economies of all the
recognized and unrecognized states in the South Caucasus: Armenia,
Georgia, Azerbaijan, the NKR, Abkhazia and South Ossetia into line
with the level of EU member states in order to prepare these state's
joining the EU in the next decade. A. Grigorian reported that the
problem of granting status of an associated member of the EU to the
South Caucasian confederation is likely to be solved within 5 years.
According to him, it is possible to establish a strategic center for
development of the South Caucasus in Bratislava, the capital of the
Slovak Republic. This center will operate as a EU body responsible for
development of diplomatic, economic and political links in the South
Caucasus. The sides agreed to assist the creation of this center by
holding frequent meetings.
