    Armenia's euroatlantic integration

    Friday, January 30, Davos, Switzerland ` While in Davos, President of
    the Republic of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus met with President Serzh
    Sargsyan of Armenia.

    The two state leaders discussed the issue of Armenia's membership in
    the European Union and NATO, the prospects for the development of
    bilateral relations, and the need to settle the Nagorno-Karabakh
    conflict.

    President Adamkus assured Lithuania's support for closer relations
    between Armenia and the European Union and its cooperation with NATO.

    Underlining the need to settle the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict,
    Lithuania's President said Lithuania would strongly support a peaceful
    solution of the conflict.

    `Once this problem is solved, the region will enjoy a higher level of
    security and stability. Solution of this conflict is important for the
    whole Europe,' President Adamkus said, stressing once again this issue
    must only be solved peacefully and by negotiations.

    Talking about the prospects of Lithuanian-Armenian relations,
    President Adamkus noted that the relations between the two states have
    become closer and more intensive over the past few years, and that
    this promised successful development of these relations in the future.

    President Sargsyan noted with delight that Armenia's Embassy was to be
    opened in Vilnius in the near future. Lithuania's Embassy in Yerevan
    was opened in 2007.

    President Adamkus invited this Armenian counterpart to visit
    Lithuania.

    President Adamkus presented to the Armenian President the candidature
    of Lithuania's Ambassador at UNESCO, Ina MarÄ?iulionytÄ - ,
    to the position of UNESCO Director General. Lithuania's Head of State
    underlined her candidature was put forward jointly by the three Baltic
    states, and asked for Armenia's support in the election.
