AZERBAIJAN, ARMENIA LEADERS MEET OVER NAGORNO-KARABAKH

The presidents of Azerbaijan and Armenia met on Thursday but no
detailed information was publicized about the meeting, which was part
of efforts to settle the Nagorno- Karabakh conflict.

Azerbaijan's Ilham Aliyev and Armenia's Serzh Sargsyan, who met
in St. Petersburg in the presence of representatives of the Minsk
Group, a mediating body appointed by the Organization for Security
and Cooperation in Europe, were due to have separate meetings with
    Russian President Dmitry Medvedev later.

After that, Aliyev and Sargsyan were to attend a working dinner to
    be hosted by Medvedev.

Medvedev's spokeswoman said on Tuesday that the Russian president's
planned meetings with his Azeri and Armenian counterparts meant
Azerbaijan and Armenia sought to continue to look for a negotiated
    solution to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

"It is actually an important fact that such a meeting is going to
take place because this means a continuation of the process that the
president started earlier, when the Moscow Declaration was signed,"
    Natalya Timakova told reporters.

"It is an important point that the Armenian and Azeri leaders are
coming to St. Petersburg in order to take part in the forum [St.

Petersburg Economic Forum]. This offers one more chance to meet and
discuss the current situation. The very fact that the dialogue is
continuing is important, as is the fact that the parties are showing
willingness to hold it and recognize the mediating role of Russia in
    this issue," she said.
