As of June 5, 38 tons of sweet cherry was exported from Armenia,
which was by 4 tons more than in the same period of last year. The
Head of the Plant Quarantine and Cultivation Inspection of RA Ministry
of Agriculture Vram Gyulzadian told NT correspondent that 2,061 tons
of potato was exported from the country in the indicated period -
compared to 4,467 tons last year.
It was mentioned that cabbage imports grew by 2,000 tons this year. V.
Gyulzadian explained that the main reason is that in recent years
farmers prefer to cultivate grain and barley. According to him,
this contributed to a fall in harvests of melons and gourds, as a
result of which Armenia is turning from an exporting country into an
importing one.
129 thousand tons of wheat, 20 tons of corn, 1,464 tons of groats,
and 5.153 tons of rice were imported into Armenia in January-May
2009. Unlike the indicated crops, tomato and cucumber imports did
not grow in the indicated months: 30 tons of cucumber and 51 tons of
tomato was imported.
