An early election will be held in the city of Nor Hachn.
According to some verified sources, the incumbent mayor Gevorg
Avetisyan is going to tender his resignation to Kotayk's Marzpet
(Marz governor).
Gevorg Avetisyan is said to have problems with the City Council. He
is affiliated with the Prosperous Armenia Party (BHK). Most Aldermen
are also BHK members.
Gevorg Avetisyan was elected City Mayor in the result of an early
election on December 11, 2005. Previously, he occupied the position
of Assistant Director of "Electric Networks of Armenia" CJSC.
The early election became a must after ex Mayor Armen Keshishyan who
was then taken under arrest with charges of murdering the head of
Arzni-based "Electric Networks" Company Ashot Mkhitaryan was reelected
to the post.
It was the first time an arrested person had been elected to a top
position in Armenia.
Anyway, the Territorial Election Commission found the election results
invalid, and a new election was conducted.
Armen Keshishyan was sentenced to a 3.6-year imprisonment. He was
released in May 2008.
