Following the trace of the Orinats Yerkir party
The results of the Yerevan municipal elections revealed that the
Armenian National Congress (ANC) is not competitive as a political
force and that it does not enjoy the trust of the people in the
opposition. The ANC, which has ambitions to be the only opposition
force, did not pass the test. These statements have not been made by
the Republican Party leader Galust Sahakyan or the Orinats Yerkir
(Law-Governed Country) chairman Arthur Baghdasaryan. They have been
made by Zaruhi Bostandjian, a member of the Heritage party. At a press
conference yesterday, she and the Heritage faction leader, Armen
Martirosyan, gave this assessment of the ANC.
The mentioned individuals from Heritage, who supported the opposition
in the past one year, are not the main point of the issue. The main
point is the motivation that has led Heritage to make such a
sensational statement and literally change its position by 360
degrees.
This curtsy, which at fist glance seems to be absurd, can have only
one logical explanation in the context of the events of the past
week. The West, most likely the USA, has pressured Heritage to make
such announcements because they (the West) were concerned by the
statements Levon Ter-Petrosyan made at a rally on 1 June.
Any document signed by Serzh Sargsyan has no legal force for
us. Particularly if it relates to Armenian-Turkish relations and the
settlement of the Nagornyy Karabakh conflict settlement, said the
first president of the Republic of Armenia. At this point, when talks
on the settlement of the Nagornyy Karabakh conflict have intensified
under the aegis of the USA, Ter-Petrossyan's statement meant that even
if Serzh Sargsyan and Ilham Aliyev signed a peace agreement, this
would not be accepted by Armenian society or by a big portion of
society that trusts the ANC.
Thus, Levon Ter-Petrosyan's announcement threatened the current
settlement plan, which is, mildly speaking, anti-Armenian. It is
understandable that the sides which support this settlement plan, and
the USA is one of them, will be against this [Ter-Petrosyan's
statement] and will try to discredit the ANC in the eyes of public. It
is also understandable that the above mentioned conclusions will not
please the Heritage members and they will announce that the media are
blackening their good reputation. But yesterday's move by Heritage is
fully illogical even if we desired it to be.
