    /PanARMENIAN.Net/ "In February 1899 the first train, overcoming
    180 kilometers, arrived in Alexanderpol from Tiflis. Since then for
    Armenia not having a direct exit to the sea and located in mountains
    1800 meters high above the sea level, the railway transportation has
    had an important strategic value in maintenance with the reliable
    transport communication promoting economic and social development of
    the Republic," this is an introductory paragraph to the new web site
    of the South Caucasus Railway CJSC launched on June 19.

    The corporate web site www.ukzhd.am highlights company's activity,
    reflect its structure and composition of the governing board of
    directors. Users can get acquainted with recent news in the sphere of
    railway transportation, information about bids, concession contract
    and the process of its implementation, RA Law about railway transport
    and company's tariff policy for 2009, etc. Besides, one can find
    photo gallery and other helpful information.

    CJSC South Caucasus Railways is a subsidiary of OJSC Russian
    Railways. According to concession, signed on February 13 last year
    "Armenian Railways" were passed to concession management of South
    Caucasus Railways for a 30 year period with permission to prolongate
    the term for another 10 years after the first twenty years of
    work. South Caucasus Railways pledged to make investments into
    infrastructure. According condition Armenia' railway 4300 employees
    continue working for the South Caucasus Railway with 20 per cent
    increase in wages. New management pledged to upgrade infrastructure,
    investing $ 572 million, $ 220 million out of which within the coming
    5 years.
