Washington. - APA. A resolution claiming recognition of the 1915
happenings as "Armenian genocide" has been introduced to the U.S. House
of Representatives by Armenian lobby in the Congress.
The measure, H.Res.252, spearheaded by Democratic Representatives
Frank Pallone and Adam Schiff and Republican Representatives Mark
Kirk and George Radanovich is signed by 70 House colleagues.
The document calls on US President Barack Obama to label World War
I-era happenings as "genocide" while Washington fears such a step
would anger US ally Turkey.
The draft needs passage through the House of Representatives Committee
on Foreign Affairs before reaching the House.
Turkey slammed the use of the genocide label, stating that Armenians
and at least as many Turks died in civil strife when Armenians took
up arms and sided with invading Russian troops.
