RA CEC REJECTS ACCREDITATION APPLICATION OF SUPREME COUNCIL - DEPUTY CLUB NGO OBSERVERS

YEREVAN, MARCH 23, NOYAN TAPAN. The RA Central Electoral Commission
(CEC) at the March 22 sitting unanimously rejected the accreditation
application of the Supreme Council - Deputy Club NGO representatives
for taking part in the March 31 Yerevan Council of Elders elections on
a monitoring mission. The bases for the decision were the decisions
made by CEC on the same occasion on 2007 February 6 and November 16,
RA Civil Appeal Court's 2007 May 4 decision, and the circumstance
that the applicant organization's regulations were not brought in
line with the RA legislation.
According to the Electoral Code, the NGOs, the regulations tasks of
which include issues of democracy and human rights and which do not
support the candidates or the parties have the right of monitoring
mission.
It should be mentioned that the NGO Chairman, non-partisan Ruben
Torosian was also on organization observers' list. The latter is
nominated for Yerevan Council of Elders elections by the Armenian
National Congress electoral roll.
As Noyan Tapan correspondent was informed by CEC Spokesperson Tatev
Ohanian, no other applications have been received from the start of
the term fixed for observers' accreditation, February 26. The deadline
for observers' accreditation in CEC is May 21.
