Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan plans to discuss the
ways of regulating of Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict at talks with US
President Barack Obama during his visit to Turkey.
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said this in a live
broadcast of Turkish TV channel Show TV.
"Solution of problems between Azerbaijan and Armenia will help to
overcome the difficulties in relations of Turkey with Armenia", -
said Erdogan.
Turkish PM noted that US with France and Russia is one of three
co-chairs of OSCE Minsk Group, which for 17 years works on regulating
of Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
According to Erdogan if US with other co-chairs will manage to solve
this problem then it will help Turkey to overcome the difficulties
in the region.
"These countries are also permanent members of UN Security Council and
they need to solve this problem in the shortest possible time. This
will make our work easier", - said Erdogan.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988
when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan
lost all of Nagorno-Karabakh except for Shusha and Khojali in December
1991. In 1992-93, Armenian armed forces occupied Shusha, Khojali and 7
districts surrounding Nagorno-Karabakh. Azerbaijan and Armenia signed
a ceasefire in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group - Russia,
France, and the U.S. - are currently holding the peace negotiations.
