STEPAN SAFARIAN: ARMENIAN-TURKISH PROTOCOLS CREATE RISKS OF DEVELOPMENTS BY DIFFERENT SCENARIOS FOR RA

    Oct 6, 2009

YEREVAN, OCTOBER 6, NOYAN TAPAN. The Armenian-Turkish protocols have
no precondition and are only aimed at improvement of Armenian-Turkish
relations and opening the borders. RA National Assembly RPA faction
member Karen Avagian expressed such an opinion at an October 6 press
conference. In his words, the issue of Armenian Genocide is among
    the supposed preconditions.

It is the consequences and compensation ways of the Genocide that
will be discussed," K. Avagian said.

In his words, these issues were speculated by many political forces
for their own purposes. "All of us have anxieties, concerns. However, I
wonder how did we imagine the process of improving the Armenian-Turkish
relations, which is the right way of achieving it?," K. Avagian said
adding that formerly all political forces spoke about improving the
    relations, opening the borders.

According to him, the actions of protest held during RA President's
pan-Armenian trip were "not so sincere" as many even are not aware of
the protocols' content. In his words, it is a result of misrepresenting
    the truth, having no information.

According to Zharangutiun (Heritage) faction head Stepan Safarian, the
Armenian-Turkish protocols create possibilities and risks of equivocal
interpretations, development by different scenarios for Armenia. And
through public discussions, according to him, an attempt is made to
force to the public the view the prevailing majority of Armenians does
not agree to. In S. Safarian's affirmation, the Diaspora is very well
informed and the first wave of strong criticism came from the very
Diaspora that demanded not signing the protocols.

    S. Safarian considers alarming RA President Serzh Sargsyan's approaches
in this issue. "Under the circumstance it is just unintelligible
why after such actions of protest the Armenian authorities should
constantly insist on the view that all the same, the protocols will
be signed," S. Safarian said adding that today the Armenian people
has a single wish, not to enter into this process as it is only the
Armenian side that has no preconditions.
