National resistance movement should be re-established in Azerbaijan: MP

There is a serious need to re-establish the National Resistance
Movement (NRM) in connection with settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh
problem, the Azerbaijani MP from opposition Panah Huseyn believes.
"Formerly, made attempts were to re-establish the NRM's activities
initiated by former president Abulfaz Elchibey and currently there is
more favorable situation in the country for it," Huseyn told Trend
News on Oct.24.
In 1988-1991 the NRM operated in the country to restore the
independence of Azerbaijan.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988
when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian
armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan since 1992,
including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and 7 surrounding districts.
Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The
co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group - Russia, France, and the U.S. - are
currently holding the peace negotiations.
According to Huseyn, the movement that will help society to express
its protest against the actions on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, that
are contrary to Azerbaijan's interests may be named in a different
way.
"Our aim is to organize social mobilization of political forces, NGOs,
prominent intellectuals, as well as veterans of the Karabakh war,
families of martyrs and representatives of the occupied lands," the MP
added.
According to Huseyn, the most acceptable option for achieving this
mobilization could be the restoration of the NRM. "In my opinion, this
function can be done by establishing the movement, like the Popular
Front. However, because of disagreements among the political forces,
the most acceptable option is to recreate the NRM," he added.
