The Appellate Court today rejected advocates' petition on releasing
young opposition activist Tigran Arakelyan on bail.
Remind that last week a Yerevan court extended Arakelian's pre-trial
detention for another two months.
Arakelian's defense attorney Vartuhi Elbakian appealed the court
decision at the Appellate Court.
Tigran Arakelian is charged with hooliganism (Article 285 of the
Criminal Code) after an alleged assault on a police officer. He was
detained on July 1 and faces up to five years in prison.
Arakelian, who is currently in prison hospital, has serious health
problems. He continues to complain of deteriorating eyesight and
headaches, which he insists is the result of the head injuries
inflicted on him by police.
