OVER 20 CHILDREN IN SOUTHERN ARMENIA HOSPITALIZED WITH ENTERIC INFECTION

    ARKA
    September 8, 2009
    Yerevan

Over 20 children of a kindergarten in southern Armenia have been
hospitalized after being diagnosed with enteric infection, Armenian
    Health Ministry said.

A press release by the ministry said the first five children from a
kindergarten in Sisian, a town in the southern province of Syunik,
were hospitalized on September 5 with symptoms of enteric viruses. It
said the ministry was notified immediately by the local authorities.

After receiving the signal minister Harutyun Kushkian ordered
to dispatch a team of experts, led by chief of the Hygienic and
Anti-Epidemic Inspection of the ministry Artavazd Vanian and Armenia's
chief infectiologist Ara Asoyan, to Sisian.

According to a preliminary inspection, the cause of the disease was
food intoxication. All anti-epidemic measures were taken swiftly for
early detection of other infected children. The hotbed of the disease
was disinfected and the staff and the remaining food were examined.

Local authorities closed the kindergarten for some time. All 25
children with symptoms of the disease have been hospitalized.

According to doctors, the children's life is out of danger. The
hospital is equipped with necessary medications, disinfectants and
medical personnel to treat the children, the press release said adding
that the treatment is under tight control of the ministry. M.M.
