Unsolved conflicts may resume at any time: French MP

Azerbaijan, Baku, Sept.18. / Trend News corr J. Babayeva /

French MP Tierri Mariani believes the Azerbaijani-Armenian conflict
    can no longer continue.

"Unsolved conflicts may resume with renewed vigor at any time. It is
doubtless that they are threatening the security of the region. It is
time for dialogue to resolve the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict," said
Mariani, MP of the French National Assembly, member of the French
delegation to the CE Parliamentary Assembly.

According to Mariani, although the French parliament recognized the
so-called "Armenian genocide", France condemns the occupation of 20
    percent of the Azerbaijani territory.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988
when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian
armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan since 1992,
including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and 7 surrounding
districts. Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in
1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group - Russia, France, and the
U.S. - are currently holding the peace negotiations.
