PRIME MINISTER OF ARMENIA: COMPUTER IN EVERY FAMILY WILL CHANGE GENERAL PUBLIC MENTALITY

ArmInfo. In the crisis year 2009 the IT-sector in Armenia ensured 17%
growth, Armenian Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan said on Wednesday
at the meeting on occasion of the 10th Anniversary of the Union of
Information Technologies Enterprises of Armenia (UITE).
"Six years ago the government announced information technologies
as one of the prior sectors of development. Over those years we
have achieved much and the questions you raise at our meetings are
consistently controlled and settled by the government staff. I am glad
that at our latest meeting we discussed fulfillment of the government's
commitments to develop the sector and registered significant progress
in that area despite some unsettled tasks," T.
Sargsyan said. He said that in 2009 despite general economic decline
connected first of all with falling construction scales, the IT-sector
grew 17%. The services provided in the sector were developed and
new companies were opened. "This means that our joint programs are
bringing positive results," the prime minister said highlighting
importance of the support by international financial organizations.
"In particular, we believe the project "Computer for Everyone"
fundamental. Computer to every family will change general public
mentality. Internet access will make it possible for citizens to use
dozens of state services," the prime minister said.
"One of the major achievements of 2009 was entry of the third operator
in the local market that significantly stiffened competition and
reduced tariffs. Internet access and tariffs are also among the
government's tasks, and serious investments are made in the sector. In
2009 a new company occurred in Armenia that laid external optical
interconnection. Competition will sharply increase in this sphere as
well and the services will become various and of higher quality and
tariffs will be reduced. Summing up the results of 2009, we have
registered slump of tariffs in the Internet market and we expect
similar trends also in 2010," Tigran Sargsyan said.
