AZERBAIJANI MP: FIASCO OF ZURICH PROTOCOLS CAN BE CONSIDERED AZERBAIJAN'S SUCCESS

The fiasco that befell the Zurich protocols at this stage can be
considered as Azerbaijan's success, Azerbaijani MP Aydin Mirzazade
told Trend.
"Initially, we said that the planned new regional geopolitical changes
develop in a direction contrary to Azerbaijan's interests and we have
strongly opposed this," Mirzazade said.
Turkish and Armenian foreign ministers Ahmet Davutoglu and Edward
Nalbandian signed the Ankara-Yerevan protocols in Zurich Oct. 10.
Sagsyan announced about cancellation of ratification of the protocols
April 23.
Diplomatic relations between Armenia and Turkey have been broken due
to Armenia's claims of an alleged genocide, and its occupation of
Azerbaijani lands. The border between them has been broken since 1993.
"Armenia will make every effort to obtain financial assistance from
the international community, arguing serious economic problems that the
country had faced in connection with the closed borders with Turkey,"
he said.
Mirzazade said Sargsyan's visit to Russia following after participation
in the Washington Nuclear Summit indicates that the purpose of
discussions in Washington and Moscow was to develop a plan for
Yerevan's further actions.
"The fact that immediately after this meeting, the protocols were
withdrawn from the parliament and their discussion was postponed
indefinitely is a tactical move. It is a trick considering a number of
interests. On one hand, Armenia, thus tries to increase West's pressure
on Turkey, on the other hand, it is an allusion to the United States,
that Russia has the greatest weight in the region," Mirzazade added.
Mirzazade said Azerbaijan has always respected Turkey's independent
actions towards the protocol. Turkey's position on these protocols
met Azerbaijan's interest and was consistent with the international
legal norms, he added.
Armenia's activities and policy have created the conditions for
freezing protocols and increasing instability in the region,
Mirzazade added.
