ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) ' For a second time, President Barack Obama is
passing up an opportunity to refer to the massacre of Armenians in
Turkey nearly a century ago as "genocide."
When he was running for president, Obama repeatedly said he would use
that word to describe the killings.
But it's a move that could damage relations with Turkey, a key U.S. ally.
In a statement today marking the 95th anniversary of the start of the
slaughter, Obama said it was "one of the worst atrocities" of the 20th
century.
But even as he refused to repeat the term "genocide" that he used
during his campaign, Obama said his view of the killings hasn't
changed.
Armenians say 1.5 million of their people were killed by Ottoman Turks
around the time of World War I. Turkey denies that the massacres were
genocide. And it says the death toll is inflated.
