MONTEVIDEO, APRIL 26, NOYAN TAPAN. The President of Uruguay Jose
Mujica on April 24 attended an event in Montevideo to mark the
95th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, during which a khachkar
carved in Armenia was erected in Armenia Square of the Uruguayan
capital. The head of the Uruguayan Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic
Church Archbishop Hakob Glnjian consecrated the khachkar.
Uruguay's Education and Culture Minister Ricardo Ehrlich and Sport
and Tourism Deputy Minister Lilian Keshishian delivered speeches. The
messages of the Catholicos of All Armenians Karekin II and the Armenian
Ambassador to Uruguay Vladimir Karmirshalian were read at the event.
According to the RA MFA Press and Information Department, the khachkar
was erected with the assistance of Uruguayan Armenian benefactor
Karlos Ketsoyan and on the initiative of Uruguayan structures of the
Armenian General Benevolent Union and the Social Democrat Hunchak
party, as well as the Armenian National Center and the commission of
Armenia Square. The khachkar's author is Ruben Nalbandian from Armenia.
