_Primate of Shirak Diocese Meets Local Clergy in NY_

Bishop Mikayel Ajapahian, Primate of the Diocese of the Armenian Church of
Shirak, is visiting the Eastern Diocese this week.

A luncheon was hosted in his honor at the Diocesan Center in New York City
on Thursday, July 29. Archbishop Khajag Barsamian, Primate of the Diocese of
the Armenian Church of America (Eastern), and clergy from Connecticut, New
York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania welcomed Bishop Ajapahian and heard him
speak about developments in the Shirak Diocese.

Bishop Mikayel Ajapahian was appointed as Primate of the Shirak Diocese in
1999. With its administrative center in Gyumri, the Diocese has jurisdiction
over more than 30 churches across Armenia's northwestern province. It has
experienced a revival in the past decade, with the restoration of churches
damaged by the 1988 earthquake and years of disrepair under Soviet rule.

The Shirak Diocese also has launched Christian education programs,
established a cultural center, and implemented humanitarian aid projects. In
the fall, the region will see the opening of the new Harijavank Theological
Seminary, which will prepare young men to serve as priests in the Armenian
    Church.
