YEREVAN. August 4, 2010: Military actions in the zone of the
Karabakh conflict may begin during the fall of this year, said
political observer David Petrosian at the political debates of the
Sardarapat initiative group. The threat of the resumption of war in
the conflict zone increases with every passing day. He referred to
reports in unnamed Azerbaijani media, that men aged 18 to 45 were
not being issued visas at foreign embassies, at the request of the
Azerbaijani leadership.
In the light of the increasing threat of war, it is necessary to
call on the Armenian Diaspora in U.S. to stop the campaign against
the candidacy of Mathew Bryza for the position of the U.S. ambassador
to Azerbaijan, Petrosian believes. "Under the current circumstances,
it is in Armenia's interests to have the U.S. appoint its ambassador
to Azerbaijan as soon as possible," because the United States can
prevent Azerbaijan from starting a war.
If Azerbaijan begins the military actions, Russia will not interfere,
because Nagorno Karabakh is not Armenia's territory, said Petrosian.
Petrosian believes that at this stage Russia is more interested in
Azerbaijan than in Armenia, and will try to win Azerbaijan's favor.
The main goal of Moscow is to deploy its peacekeepers to the zone of
the Karabakh conflict, and it is the main point of the Azeri-Russian
dialogue. However, Baku does not permit the deployment of Russian
peacekeepers (Turan).
