Armenian environmental groups protested against the Yerevan
Municipality's plan to build a dolphinarium in the capital's Komitas
Park, the Caucasian Knot website has reported.
Grayr Savzyan, head of environmental organization Ekodar, said last
week that 50 environmental organizations had sent a letter to the
president, the prime minister, the Nature Protection Ministry and
Yerevan's mayor demanding an immediate halt to the construction of
the dolphinarium.
Local environmentalists failed to receive a response from the mayor
regarding their request of documents confirming the legality of the
construction of the dolphinarium, Silva Adamyan, chair of a related
nongovernmental organization, said.
"We can't ensure the necessary climatic conditions and diet for
dolphins. The animals are accustomed to countries where there is sea
or ocean, with very high humidity; we have nothing similar. How can
we keep these animals?" Adamyan asked.
"The construction of the dolphinarium is aimed to restore the park,
which is in miserable condition, and, thus, to protect the park from
disparate buildings and lawlessness," according to the Yerevan mayor's
press office.
