The Azerbaijani Defense Ministry refuted WikiLeaks's new publications
on Defense Minister Safar Abiyev's negotiations, Ministry Spokesman
Eldar Sabiroglu said.
"I was very surprised after reading the publication. I, as the ministry
spokesman, have attended many meetings, especially negotiations with
foreign ambassadors. I remember a meeting with Derse and I did not
witness such a conversation. The text looks more like a fable and
creates the impression that it is a provocative, which aims to damage
relations between the two countries," Sabiroglu told Trend News.
As NEWS.am reported previously, WikiLeaks published conversation
between Azerbaijani Defense Minister Safar Abiyev and U.S. official
revealing issues related to supplies of weapons to Armenia, as well
as Gabala and Armavir radar stations.
"Abiyev told the Ambassador about his late-January trip to Moscow
to discuss Azerbaijan's allegations that Russia had made extensive
weapons transfers to Armenia throughout 2008. In formal meetings,
Abiyev said, his Russian counterpart stuck to the talking points and
denied any involvement.
However, "after the second bottle of vodka," that evening, he said,
the Russians opened up and admitted to having transferred weapons
to Armenia. In an interesting side note, Abiyev quoted Serdyukov as
saying: "Do you follow the orders of your President?...Well, I follow
the orders of two Presidents", reads the document.
The document mentions that on March 14, Safar Abiyev told the
Ambassador he does not object to exploration of joint U.S.-Russian
use of the Gabala radar station, but was deliberately vague on whether
the Russians' lease would be renewed on its expiration in 2012.
