ArmInfo. Yerevan Municipality has explained its stance regarding the
"Garden of Dragons".
As EcoLur reports, Yerevan Municipality disseminated a statement
referring to "Garden of Dragons". The statement says, "We consider
it necessary to say information disseminated by several electronic
newspapers about the statement made by Yerevan Mayor Gagik Beglaryan in
regard with the construction of a territory called "Garden of Dragons"
is distorted and doesn't comply with the truth...."
The Mayor's stance is as follows: no tree should be cut and no
construction should be carried out in the alley's territory, which
would hamper the garden's functionality. And if any construction is
carried out outside of the garden and meet all the required standards,
why not to build, the more especially as the matter concerns a
residential building".
To recall, Air Construction Company was going to build a 18-storey
building in the territory of the alley without relevant resolution
by the state environment examination. Yet in 2000 part of the alley
was privatized and its owners changed several times over the last
10 years. On November 17 the 2 thsd sq.m. territory of the park
was fenced, the benches were taken out, afterwards workers started
cutting the trees. Local residents removed the fence to protect the
green area. Noteworthy, the residents' initiative was supported by
the head of the Nork district Melik Gasparyan. By his decision, the
holes, dug out by heavy machinery, were backfilled. A tree-planting
action was held in the alley on December 2.
