One of the world's best tenors in Armenia
World renown tenor Placido Domingo has arrived in Yerevan for a
performance tonight (December 3). Domingo was received by the prime
minister and speaker of the National Assembly of Armenia and was
awarded with the NA Medal of Honor. Domingo said that he appreciated
the warm reception here, and promised "to visit Armenia again to
enjoy this wonderful country."
"I have had Armenia in my mind since I was very young. My mother was
a singer, and her vocal teacher was an Armenian. I knew Armenians
long ago, however, I did not manage to visit all this time," says
the Spanish tenor.
On Thursday, NA Speaker Hovik Abrahamyan, receiving the musician
and delivering one of the highest awards - the NA Medal of Honor -
to him said that "Maestro's visit is a unique event in the cultural
life of Armenia."
The concert of the legendary tenor will take place in Yerevan's biggest
hall - Karen Demirchyan Sports and Concert Complex (with about 10,000
seats). And even though the concert ticket prices were rather high
for Armenia - 40,000-200,000 drams ($112-$560), there are almost no
tickets left at box offices.
The organizers of Yerevan Perspectives Festival invited Domingo to
Armenia. They have been carrying negotiations with him since 2005.
"The fact that the festival managed to bring other world known stars
to Armenia had an important role in Domingo's agreement to visit our
country," says Sona Hovhannisyan, festival manager.
During the recent few years, within the framework of the festival, Joe
Cocker, Al Jarreau, George Benson, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Kronos
Quartet and other super stars' concerts were organized in Yerevan.
