EMPLOYMENT IS THEIR MAIN PROBLEM OF PEOPLE WITH PHYSICAL DISABILITIES

YEREVAN, December 3, /ARKA/. Armen Alaverdian, head of Unison
non-governmental organization, dealing with problems of people with
limited physical abilities, said to a news conference today that
employment was their main problem.
He commended VivaCell and Orange telecommunications and some other
companies for hiring people with physical disabilities. However, he
added, that their number across the country is several hundred only,
or 8% of all disabled people who according to government data are
180,000 and the majority of them are able-bodied.
Arpine Abrahamian, head of Salvage non-governmental organization,
dealing with children and youth problems, said the majority of
employers have no idea what a huge potential people with disabilities
have.
According to official numbers, 64% of all disabled people or
114,700 are people of able-bodied age. The bulk of them live in the
northwestern province of Shirak and 10,000 in its administrative
capital Gyumri.
