As a result of increased interest from the community on the nearly
1,000 descendants of victims of the Armenian Genocide who will
receive compensation from French insurance giant AXA for unpaid life
insurance benefits, European magazine "Days" once again contacted
Armenian-American attorney Vartkes Yeghiyan for comments.
According to Yeghiyan, the AXA Settlement Claim Fund Board decision
was made by the U.S. Distrct Court in the Central District of the
State of California. Since the court ruling is final and not subject
to appeal, the council has closed the doors to its office.
The Fund received 13,790 claims, of which 996 were approved. Each
claimant will receive slightly more than $8,000 USD, and all those
who filed claims (either approved or not) will receive notice.
The decision was made with the participation of the AXA Settlement
Claim Fund Board of Directors - Samuel Shnorokian (Paris), Hilda
Choboian (Lyon), Zaven Gabrielian (Marseilles) - and with the
supervision of Barsegh Kartalian (Los Angeles). The decisions were
made July-August 2009, but due to technical reasons, the court decision
was implemented only near the end of January 2010.
Out of the $17.5 million USD settlement awarded, $11 million USD will
be split among the descendants, with the rest going to humanitarian
organizations and lawyer fees.
