The Seattle Chamber Players, one of Seattle's standout contemporary
chamber ensembles, take a turn for the Armenian on Friday with a
performance of works by Tigran Mansurian and Artur Avanesov. Avanesov,
an accomplished pianist, will perform two of his keyboard pieces solo.
He joins SCP on three other works of his, including "Namu Amida Butsu,"
a flute-piano duet that starts on a thunderous note and then explores
chilly, mountain-and-dell landscapes of sound, and "... leise ,"
for clarinet and piano, a beautiful, lilting, meditative work.
Avanesov's pristine pieces have an affinity with the spare, intense
work of Arvo Pärt. Mansurian has composed for film ("Color of
Pomegranates") as well as classical ensembles. SCP, joined by Avanesov,
will perform his "4 Hayrens" (for clarinet and piano) and "Agnus Dei"
(for chamber quartet).
8 p.m. Friday, Chapel Performance Space, Good Shepherd
Center, 4649 Sunnyside Ave. N., Seattle; $15 at door only
(www.seattlechamberplayers.org).
