YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 16, NOYAN TAPAN. The Armenian-Turkish rapprochement
should be viewed first of all from the viewpoint of national security.
Making this statement at a press conference on February 16, Samvel
Nikoyan, Vice Speaker of the RA National Assembly, member of RPA
faction, underlined that it is clearly said in the national security
strategy that "by its line of action, Turkey poses a threat to
Armenia's national security". In his opinion, the Armenian-Turkish
rapprochement will help mitigate these threats.
Besides, in his words, the Armenian-Turkish normalization will create a
"favorable background" in the region, which later may contribute to
the resolution of the Karabakh problem.
S. Nikoyan expressed an opinion that Armenia should continue its policy
of initiative and not wait for Turkey's steps regarding discussion of
the protocols. He said that the protocols should be ratified within
a reasonable period.
"The Armenian president started the Armenian-Turkish normalization
process, during which Armenia has made many friends. The Republic
of Armenia has become a reliable and predictable partner for great
states. We should be able to maintain this image," S. Nikoyan stated.
