OSCE Chairman-in-Office, Kazakh Secretary of State and Foreign Minister
Kanat Saudabayev met the President of the Nagorno Karabakh Republic
Bako Sahakyan. This was the first visit of the OSCE Chairperson to
the region and thus his first meeting with the NKR President.
Issues related to the settlement of the Karabakh conflict were
discussed during the meeting.
Rating high the efforts of the OSCE in the Karabakh conflict
settlement, the NKR President underlined the necessity of restoring
the negotiation format approved by the Budapest summit of the OSCE.
He noted that it would be impossible to reach a comprehensive
settlement of the conflict without immediate participation of
the Nagorno Karabakh Republic. Bako Sahakyan once again expressed
conviction that the conflict should be settled exclusively by peaceful
means and unconstructive position of Azerbaijan is among the main
obstacles in this process.
According to Bako Sahakyan, any such visit inspires certain hopes,
especially considering that Kazakhstan has just assumed the OSCE
presidency.
"I think it's natural that the parties, particularly NKR, connect
hopes with the new presidency and we have had discussions in that
direction," Bako Sahakyan told reporters after the meeting.
