Armenia calls on Turkey to be consistent in ratifying protocols
YEREVAN Jan 21
Turkey should be consistent in ratifying Armenian-Turkish protocols or
otherwise face 'appropriate measures ' from Armenia, warned Armenian
parliamentary speaker Ovik Abraamian.
"Turkey should exercise consistency in the process of ratification of
Armenian-Turkish protocols and their implementation, and refrain from
steps aimed at disrupting the process. Otherwise, Armenia is prepared
to take certain appropriate measures," Abraamian said at a meeting
with EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus Peter Semneby.
Abraamian said it hoped Turkey would abide by the letter and spirit of
the protocols signed in Zurich on October 10, 2009, the Armenian
parliamentary press service told Interfax.
The ratification of the Armenian-Turkish protocols in Armenia is
proceeding without inappropriate delays, it said.
The Armenian and Turkish Foreign Ministries traded statements on Wednesday.
In particular, the Turkish Foreign Ministry criticized the Armenian
Constitutional Court's ruling on finding the protocols constitutional,
in which the court said the obligations set by the document are mutual
and cannot be extended to third countries.
The Armenian foreign minister told his Turkish counterpart on the
phone that Turkey should be consistent in the ratification and
implementation of the protocols and refrain from looking for
farfetched pretexts to disrupt the process.
