ANC activist Shant Baboujian, Congressional Candidate Marcy
Winograd and ANC activist Azniv Goenjian TORRANCE, CA-With the recent
Massachusetts U.S. Senate race in mind, where a determined grassroots
effort defeated a shoe-in candidate, Armenian Americans in Southern
California have begun to focus their efforts on defeating Armenian
Genocide denier Congresswoman Jane Harman (D-36).
Supporters of the Armenian National Committee - Political Action
Committee (ANC-PAC) have begun increasing their support for Harman's
challenger, Marcy Winograd, a progressive Democrat who will square
off against Harman in the Democratic primary on June 8, 2010.
Harman became a pariah among human rights activists, including
Armenian Americans, in 2007 when she secretly wrote a letter in
opposition to the Armenian Genocide resolution to the Chairman of
the House Foreign Affairs Committee, while still being listed as a
"cosponsor" of the human rights legislation. The Los Angeles Times and
others harshly criticized Harman for flip-flopping on the genocide
resolution. California's 36th Congressional District, which is home
to an active population of Armenian Americans, covers a portion of
the South Bay in Los Angeles County, including the cities of Redondo
Beach, Manhattan Beach, Torrance, El Segundo and Venice.
"I am looking forward to voting for Marcy Winograd this June in
the Democratic primary," explained Azniv Goenjian who resides in
California's 36th Congressional District. "I am fed up with Jane
Harman and her allegiance to Turkey and their denial of the Armenian
Genocide," Goenjian added.
"We need to send to Washington, DC a true representative of the
people, not Jane Harman," commented Lori Khajadourian who resides in
California's 36th Congressional District. Marcy Winograd would be,
hands down, a far better representative for our community than Jane
Harman, who strikes me as a tool of major corporations," Khajadourian
continued.
"I have met Marcy Winograd and she is a model citizen," remarked
Minas Hasholian who lives in the Congressional District presently
represented by Jane Harman. "What we need in Congress is some good
old common sense and that is exactly what Marcy Winograd would bring
to the table for the residents of the South Bay."
