As the House Foreign Affairs Committee prepares to consider
H.Res.252-The Armenian Genocide Resolution-on Thursday, March 4,
2010, the American Hellenic Institute (AHI) joins with the Armenian
American community in helping to ensure passage of this important
human rights legislation.
"We urge the US Congress, for the sake of U.S. interests and American
values, to bring an end to all forms of U.S. complicity in Turkey's
denial of this crime against all humanity and adopt legislation
recognizing the Armenian Genocide as a clear instance of genocide,
as defined by the United Nations Genocide Convention.
H.Res.252 calls on the United States President: (1) to ensure
that U.S. foreign policy reflects appropriate understanding and
sensitivity concerning issues related to human rights, ethnic
cleansing, and genocide documented in the U.S. record relating
to the Armenian Genocide and the consequences of the failure to
realize a just resolution; and (2) in the President's annual message
commemorating the Armenian Genocide to characterize the systematic
and deliberate annihilation of 1.5 million Armenians as genocide,
and to recall the proud history of U.S. intervention in opposition
to the Armenian Genocide.
The historical record on the Armenian Genocide and similar genocides
perpetrated against the Pontian Greek and Assyrian Christian minorities
by the Turkish government is well documented. The continued efforts by
Turkey to deny these genocides only serve as an obstacle to regional
stability and greater regional cooperation. We urge the House Foreign
Affairs Committee and the full House of Representatives to affirm
the U.S. record on the Armenian Genocide by adopting H.Res.252,"
American Hellenic Institute said in a statement.
