US House panel approves Armenia 'genocide' resolution
WASHINGTON, March 4 2010
US lawmakers voted Thursday to brand the World War I-era killings of
Armenians by Ottoman Turks as "genocide," ignoring fierce opposition
from Turkey and President Barack Obama's administration.
The House Foreign Affairs Committee approved the symbolic resolution
by a 23-22 margin, setting the stage for a possible vote by the full
House of Representatives.
US NATO ally Turkey had warned passage would harm relations and US
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton had appealed to shelve the
non-binding resolution for fear it might hamper reconciliation moves
between Armenia and Turkey.
