STEPAN DEMIRCHIAN: DEMAND OF HOLDING SPECIAL ELECTIONS IN ARMENIA HAS MATURED

    March 10, 2010

YEREVAN, MARCH 10, NOYAN TAPAN. The home political crisis has not
been overcome in Armenia from 2008 March 1 up to the present, and the
last accord of the unfairness was the trial ordered against Haykakan
Zhamanak newspaper's editor Nikol Pashinian. Chairman of the People's
Party of Armenia, Armenian National Congress (ANC) representative
Stepan Demirchian stated at a March 10 press conference.

According to him, there is no progress in the economic sphere, either,
    people's socio-economic condition worsens. In S. Demirchian's words,
one of the primary problems is creation of a really independent
judicial system, and the OSCE has also touched upon it lately.

However, in his opinion, no progress can be achieved in any sphere
in Armenia unless the criminal-oligarch system is liquidated.

    S. Demirchian repeated the thought voiced at the March 1 rally that
the demand of holding special state elections in Armenia has matured.

In his words, it is time to organize a fair, transparent electoral
    process in Armenia.

Speaking about foreign policy the PPA Chairman mentioned that welcoming
the March 4 voting results of the U.S. House of Representativies
Committee on Foreign Affairs he considers improbable that the issue
of the Genocide will be placed on plenary session's agenda. "Though
the U.S. Congress is an independent structure, it is not like our
National Assembly, nevertheless, it will not discuss the issue
of the Genocide," S. Demirchian predicted. The oppositionist also
expressed an opinion that after all this Turkey will not ratify the
Armenian-Turkish protocols. As to the Nagorno Karabakh conflict,
according to S. Demirchian, it will not be solved soon.
